Wash Your Worries Away

A few days back, Aaliyah appeared preoccupied as we played her favorite board game. Worried, I asked, “Aaliyah, what’s the matter? You’re usually quite competitive during our scrabble matches.”

Her voice broke as she confided, “Bob, the project I’ve been working on fell short of funding and they might end it. I could lose my job,” her words tinged with worry.

“Oh, Aaliyah,” I reassured, placing a hand on her shoulder, “It must be tough right now but hey, I know you have given this project your best!”

She met my gaze, worry evident in her eyes. “I just can’t shake this feeling, Bob. What if I lose my job?”

Taking a deep breath, I replied, “Whatever comes our way, we’ll handle it together.” Sensing she might need a change of vibe, I suggested, “I have an idea to cheer you up!”

Reluctantly, Aaliyah nodded, a faint smile emerging. “What is it, Bob?”

With a grin, I mentioned, “Remember Pim calling about the Thai New Year celebration? It’s happening today. Let’s go, soak up some positive vibes, and forget about work for a bit.”

I had first met Pim at a local Thai joint in bustling East Village. Our bond deepened over our shared love for Thai cuisine. When we arrived at Little Thailand neighborhood, the streets pulsated with music, dance, laughter and the aroma of Thai street food in the crisp spring air.

“Welcome guys! I am so glad you both made it!” Pim exclaimed joyfully as she buried us in a tight hug.

“I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s incredible!” Aaliyah remarked, taking in the sight of people splashing water on each other.

Pim grinned, “Songkran is all about having fun and letting go. Let’s dive right in!” With that, Pim drenched unsuspecting Aaliyah with a bucket of water. Aaliyah’s shocked expression turned into laughter as she quickly recovered and chased after Pim, ready to return the favor.

Amidst the water fights and lively music, Pim suggested, “Let’s visit the temple next,” leading us through the bustling streets. Inside, we offered prayers, seeking blessings as we delicately poured scented water over Buddha statues. “This is beautiful,” Aaliyah whispered, her voice filled with awe.

As the day waned, we sat by the riverbank, indulging in Pad Thai and watching the sky turn shades of orange and pink as the sun set.

“Thank you for inviting us, Pim. I really needed this!” Aaliyah expressed with a smile. I felt relieved seeing her spirits lifted.

Pim smiled warmly, “Thank you for joining me, Bob and Aaliyah. Today has been special because we all shared it together.”

As Songkran’s water washed away our worries, it reminded us to approach life with hope and gratitude. Sometimes, a change of scenery can help us overcome moments of adversity. Sometimes, time spent near people who care about us can help us loosen up. We shouldn’t stress too much over what’s out of our hands; instead, we should trust our efforts and let things take their due course.
