Secret To Creating Lasting Habits

Lisa and I were seated at our favorite fast-food joint, a warm slice of pizza in hand, when she said, “I’ve been trying to adopt new habits, Bob. You know, I need more peace in my life. Meditation, journalizing—just a few minutes a day to clear my mind. Every time I start, something gets in the way and then I feel like I’ve failed before I even begin.” She looked frustrated.

“Lisa, I get it.” I replied warmly, “But sometimes, the key is to make it easy, almost automatic. Let’s break it down into smaller steps that can work even on a busy day.”

Lisa listened closely, “First, start small. Aim for two or three minutes of meditation rather than a full session. Often, we try to go all-in and that’s when things start to feel impossible. Just a few minutes each day will get you into the rhythm.”

Lisa nodded, her gaze softening a bit. “Two minutes? That sounds like something I could actually stick to.”

“Exactly,” I said. “And try to attach it to an existing habit—maybe right after your morning coffee or as soon as you come home. It’s all about creating a cue that will remind you without even thinking.”

“Interesting. It’s like connecting one action to another,” she said and her voice seemed lighter.

“Remember,” I added, “consistency is key, but so is patience with yourself. Habits don’t grow overnight. Instead of worrying about getting it right, focus on showing up, even if it’s just for a few minutes.”

She smiled gratefully. “Thank you, Bob. I hadn’t thought about it this way—I’ve been making it way too hard on myself.”

As we finished up our pizza, I thought about how often we let complexity hold us back from simplicity in life. So, to anyone reading: habits don’t have to be monumental tasks. With small steps, a bit of consistency, and kindness toward ourselves, we can create routines that bring us peace, one day at a time!
