Factors That Form And Influence Self-esteem.

Self-worth begins to form in early childhood. Factors that may influence it include:

  • Your thoughts and perceptions.
  • How other individuals respond to you.
  • Experience at home, school, workplace and in the community.
  • Disease, disability or trauma.
  • Age.
  • Role and status in society.
  • Media messages.
  • Relationships with people close to you, parents, siblings, peers, teachers along with other important contacts.

Many of the beliefs you hold about yourself today reflect messages you have received from all of these individuals with time.

In case your relationships are strong and you get usually positive feedback about yourself from time to time, you are more prone to see yourself as worthwhile and have far healthy self-esteem. Your thoughts have perhaps the biggest impact on your sense of worth and these thoughts are in your control. In general, however, self-confidence stays in a range that reflects how you feel about yourself overall and increases slightly with age.

Low self-esteem is regrettably a self-fulfilling prophecy. The worse you feel about who you’re and what you do, the less motivation you will have to do what it takes to build your self-esteem. From there it is easy to spiral down into a cycle of negative and circular thinking, keeping you mired in damaging and erroneous, beliefs. How may you stop this vicious cycle and start moving in a more positive direction? It is processed and it’s not going to happen overnight but there are things that you may do to get it started and have it moving.

Here are 5 strong ways to improve your self-esteem rapidly so as to start feeling more confident.

  1. Master a brand new skill. Whenever you become qualified in something which corresponds with your talents and interests, you increase your sense of competency.
  2. List your accomplishments. Think about all the things you have accomplished, then write them down. Create a list of everything you have done that you feel proud of, everything you have done well. Review your list whenever you need a reminder of your capability to get things done and also to do them well.
  3. Do something creative. Creative tasks are an effective way to put the flow into your life. Creativity stimulates the brain, so the more you use it, the more the advantages. Pull out your old guitar, write a story or poem, take a dance class or sign up for a community theater production. Whenever you add the challenge of trying something new, it can help you even more.
  4. Get clear on your values. Determine what your values are and examine your life to see where you are not living in alignment with what you think. Then make any necessary changes. The more you know exactly what you stand for, the more confident you’ll be.
  5. Challenge your limiting beliefs. Whenever you catch yourself thinking negatively about yourself, stop and challenge yourself.
