Adjust Your Sails With Every Weather

Last evening, I met Kate at a small café downtown. As we sipped our hot cocoa, she let out a sigh and said, “Bob, I feel so stuck. Work is overwhelming, my family needs my time and yet I can’t stop thinking about that Master’s degree I’ve always wanted. I just don’t see a way forward.”

I nodded, understanding her dilemma. “Kate, it sounds like you’re juggling too much and holding on to things that might no longer serve you.”

She looked puzzled. “How can I let go of a job? It pays the bills and what if I end up regretting it?”

“It’s scary,” I admitted, “but sometimes, holding on to what’s comfortable prevents us from growing. You can’t step into a new chapter of your life if you’re still rereading the old one. Letting go doesn’t mean you’re failing; it means you’re making space for something better.”

Kate smiled faintly, “That’s easier said than done.”

I smile and said, “Of course, but think about it this way: Christmas is the season of new beginnings. It’s about shedding the old and embracing the promise of something new. Seasons change for a reason, and each one comes with its own charm. By holding on to what isn’t working, you might miss the opportunity waiting at the next door. It’s a cliché, I know, but clichés exist for a reason—they’re often true.”

Kate leaned back, reflecting. “So, you’re saying I should be brave enough to close a door that’s not leading anywhere?”

“Exactly. Trust yourself, Kate. Pursue that Master’s degree, explore new opportunities, and let the spirit of this season guide you toward a fresh start.”

Kate smiled and said, “Thank you, Bob. This Christmas, I’ll embrace the new.”

As the year winds down, take a moment to reflect on what’s holding you back. Let go of the old, and welcome the new season with open arms. You never know what wonders are waiting on the other side.
