It seems to be happening at alarmingly regular intervals. Sporadic shooting and then psychoanalysis why he or she did it? Who are the victims? Who are the unlikely heroes and who are the survivors. Government is to be blamed or the society as a whole? The debate rages on and on.
Flowers at the sidewalks of the shootout site in a day or two and if possible a candle light vigil and then back to our daily chores.
Life has become a routine. The latest being the shootout at Empire State building where at least 2 people are dead and several injured.
A common man’s instinct reacts thus on hearing of the incident:
1. Oh! No! Were my dear and near ones or family part of the tragedy?
2. After that’s checked out and relieved, then the incident is looked at as a news item and analyzed in detachment.
3. Cynicism. Blaming anything and everything, usually the government.
4. Get back to the routine and await further incidents.
Have we become insensitive as a country or have just become indifferent?
I don’t know really, but I know one thing for sure, this will not go on. As much as I cynicism around me, I see good faith. I see special prayers for the fallen by the good Samaritans and then I see genuine tears from the elderly and the caring lot with candles.
We are still humans and 100% Americans. There is a reason why we have stayed at the top for so long. We care for each other. Maybe, we are on a break, but we will bounce back. The trigger happy lot is having their day now, but soon the shots will die down and there will be peace.
Let’s pray.
