Life has come to a standstill. Happens once in four years. The whole world is watching television at odd hours and different time zones to catch their country men in action. Athletes of the world have descended in London and the big old country wears a festive look.
Sportsmen of multitude color, race, religion, creed and gender are here for the world to see and it is beautiful.
Talents are tested and heroes are put to task to prove their mettle and they are relishing it.
You know the best thing about Olympics?
It’s a happy event. People win and lose, there are flowers and brickbats, but there is no hatred. It is a very happy event. It is feel good and it happens over a fortnight. It is beautiful, really.
It is a welcome relief from the usual mundane things that happen in life on an everyday basis and a very big relief from the saddest events that take place on a daily basis around the world like terrorism and such.
Impoverished countries have representatives who trump their much illustrious counterparts and there you can see that Olympics is a great leveler.
Countries that we have never heard of have folks who turn heroes and force us to notice and know about where they have come from. It is an eye opener. You can’t educate the world better than this on geography and current affairs of a country we never heard of before.
There is definitely a lot of sweat, a lot of energy expended and unbelievable amount of hard work by sportsmen and a good amount of applause from the onlookers, but the thing that stands out the most is the ecstatic joy on the faces of those who manage to get their neck around a medal.
That moment when they know they have earned a medal, that moment of vulnerability, that moment of happiness and joy and that moment when the winner hugs the loser and the contrasting tears from both… Tells me one thing. Whoever wins or loses, Olympics will stay a winner!
