“Wake up every morning eager to do the work you love.” ~ Editor Bob
After a short jog on a beautiful Sunday morning, I sat down with a hot cuppa coffee and began reading my favorite book for the umpteenth time. It was a day of relaxation and recuperation, as Aaliyah slept soundly next to me.
After a couple of hours, I proceeded to do the weekly shopping at the supermarket nearby. As I picked up the milk container, I heard a familiar voice calling my name. Turning around, I saw it was Lisa, one of my neighbors. After a bit of conversation, she wondered if I would be able to help her son with some advice as he was looking to pursue a career in writing.
I was overjoyed. I love to help young adults follow their passions by imparting the knowledge I have received over the years and guide them in anyway I can. So, I readily agreed to meet him for snacks in the evening.
After chatting for a little while with this young boy at a coffee shop, I was grasping his likes and dislikes. I could tell that he was a little unsure of what he wanted to do next. More than that, he was wary of stepping into this new phase of life as he wasn’t sure how to go about it.
Trying to calm his nerves, I told him about my first interview. The words of advice said so many years ago still remain with me. He said, “Whatever field you step into, you need to be passionate about it. You need to want to wake up in the morning and walk through the same door every day. You need the want to learn more everyday. Only then will you be happy and excel at your work place.
I continued, “Do what you love. If you do, you will put in your 100% to be the best at it. There is nothing to be scared or anxious about. In life, you experience both successes and failures. Use those failures to your advantage. Learn from your mistakes and keep thriving towards the goal you have set.
I truly hope he went away that day a little more confident.
This Labor Day let’s recognize what matters. Imbibe in your children the true meaning of an American worker as they make dreams a reality. Inspire them to choose to do the things they love.
So, as we enjoy this holiday with delicious food and great company, let’s not forget the true meaning of the occasion and the contributions made by the strong labors since time immemorial.
Cheers!
