In the wake of summers I start feeling nostalgic. I miss my siblings the most. They all live in different states in the US. The fun I had with them as a child during the summer-breaks brings a smile on my face.
I am looking forward to the family reunion; we are sailing in the Caribbean in the coming weekend with multi-generational gathering. My uncles, aunts, siblings, their children and grandchildren are all geared up for the adventure.
It’s joy to share the cultural heritage and family history with folks. A feeling of belongingness and camaraderie fills our hearts. Family teaches us true acceptance which leads to positive emotions which in turn leads to building strong relationships and a happy life.

The Caribbean cruise is to start from Florida which is our meeting point. I have planned it in such a way that all age-groups, from the young to the young-at-heart, will be enthralled. Playing mini-golf, gliding around the ice-skating rink, enjoying the jazz and salsa or the delicious dining, kids only pirate party and adults only casino games and many more fun elements have been weaved together to have the perfect get-together. I have sent the fun invites to each one of them.
Aaliyah has been busy wrapping gifts for the young ones. She looks forward to the get-together every year. She is an inseparable part of me and embraces my family with love and warmth as if she has known them for ages.
Calm and soothing winds, white beaches, swelling ocean and a private island party is what I am looking forward to this summer with rollicking laughter on old and often heard jokes. I can’t wait to be with the crazy bunch of teenagers and terrible toddlers, the proud and bragging young mothers, storyteller cousins and trendy aunts, forgetful grandparents, wise uncles, adorable mom and happy-go-lucky dad.
I remember last summer Aaliyah had hosted a camping trip where we all had let our hair down and had enjoyed the marshmallows with ghost stories. The missing love-struck young couples and the crying babies added the extra zing to the never-perfect-family-picture which took Aaliyah almost a day to put together.
I believe sharing time with our family and understanding them is the first step in knowing the self. Family is a mirror that helps us uncover our own strengths and weaknesses. It’s like the johari window opening up and letting us know our blind spots as we walk beyond the façade and masks.
Have fun this summer! No matter how whacky you feel your family is, spend time with them. Feel loved and cherished. Know your family history to know yourself.
