For some, Memorial Day marks the coming of warm weather and the beginning of the summer vacation season. For others, this nationally observed holiday is a somber occasion full of gratitude for and remembrance of loved ones.
Growing up, Memorial Day always meant a three-day weekend and the school year drawing to a close. It was an exciting time for all children and I loved going to see the parades. But as the world continued to battle for freedom, and I saw the ramifications of war, Memorial Day took on a new meaning.

While it is not quite clear where Memorial Day began, we know that Memorial Day stemmed from Decoration Days dating back to the end of the Civil War. These days were organized to honor and decorate the graves of both the Confederate and Union soldiers who sacrificed their lives with strength and courage to serve our country. Unfortunately, wars continued through out America’s history and the holiday became a time to remember and honor all of the men and women who lost their lives serving our great nation.
Memorial Day—originally celebrated as Decoration Day on 30th of May, was changed to its present name after WWII in 1967. The following year, the government moved Memorial Day and three other holidays to specified Mondays to allow for three-day weekends. While many people continue to argue that Memorial Day should be moved back to its original date to preserve its meaning, Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May and has become a traditional weekend to kick off summer vacations.
This year, the last Monday of May falls on the same three-day weekend as World Turtle Day. Established in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, World Turtle Day marks the beginning of the turtle-nesting season and aims to bring awareness to endangered tortoise and turtle species. World Turtle Day is observed globally in various ways, including participating in research projects, saving stranded turtles, and dressing up as turtles. To help spread awareness of these rare creatures and protect them, send cute turtle day cards to your friends and family on Friday, May 23rd.
And don’t forget to honor our fallen soldiers on Monday, May 26. Send greetings and Memorial Day wishes to honor and remember those who have died so that we could be free. The members of the United States Armed Forces and their families continue to inspire us everyday. Share this inspiration and send inspirational cards to encourage your loved ones to keep fighting for what they believe in.
No matter how you plan to spend Memorial Day Weekend, I wish you peace and warm feelings.
