Obama Hikes Book Sale

Send Everyday EcardsThe book given to Obama by the Venezuelan President is climbing up the bestsellers charts. This prompted Donna to go and buy a copy of the book, ‘The Open Veins of Latin America’. Steve told her that she shouldn’t have bought the book just because it was in the news. Rather she should have got something that was a judicious choice. This led to a debate between them. Donna insisted that whatever be the reason for buying it, there’s no harm in reading something that became popular overnight. Last heard, they were still bickering about it. Let me ask you guys: would you buy a book just because it’s popular? What would you look for when you want to buy a book?

  1. I tend to go through the book very quickly to see if it is interesting, but sometimes it is very tempting to buy popular books. That can give more talking points with friends.

  2. Sometimes when a book becomes popular and is in the bestsellers list you think that it has something in it that’s good to read.

  3. B. I DON’T MIND A BOOK BEING POPULAR. THOUGH FOR THE MOST PART I HAVEN’T READ A BESTSELLER NOVEL ALL THE WAY THROUGH AS THEY TEND TO BE A BIT DULL. THE BOOK HAS TO GRAB ME IN SOME WAY. WHETHER IT’S THROUGH THE STYLE OF WRITING OR THE STORY LINE. YET SOME NON FICTIONAL WORKS, LIKE THIS BOOK YOU MENTIONED, SOUNDS INTERESTING AS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW A BIT MORE ABOUT VENEZUELA AND LATIN AMERICA. BUT I TEND TO LOOK THROUGH A BOOK FIRST WHILE IN THE BOOKSTORE OR ON-LINE AND SEE IF IT MOVES ME. USUALLY IN THE FIRST CHAPER OR TWO, I CAN SENSE HOW THE BOOK MIGHT BE GOING. HOW THE PROSE ARE HANDLED. IF THERE IS A FRESH NEW WAY THE AUTHOR IS PRESENTING THE STORY, I CAN GET HOOKED IN. L.

  4. I am not an avid book reader but if I like to read some book so badly (because its popular or any other reason), I would get it from the Library. I buy only those books that I like to keep lifelong and I don’t know if I would like to keep it before reading! New books normally are not readily available at Library, so one has to reserve and wait for a few weeks before they can get it. If the interest to read it right away is very strong, one can always go to a book store and sit there and read or take your own time to go thru it before buying.
